Branderwal Project

  • 15 hectares

  • 30 MW

  • 1,500 Volts system

  • 26,000 MWh yield annually

  • 66 inverters and 3 transformers

  • 17,000 tons of CO2 savings per year

Solar Park Branderwal is located on the outskirts of Kootwijkerbroek in the Netherlands and is unique in its kind. Neighbors participate in the solar park through a cooperative. The park contains 42,588 solar panels, which together generate approximately 26 megawatts (MWh) of solar power annually. This renewable energy is enough to supply over 7,000 households!

Under some of the panels, blueberries are cultivated. Future pilots will test other crops that thrive in a shaded environment. The combination of energy production and agriculture is known as agrivoltaics.

The rest of the park is sown with an herb-rich grass mix, contributing to biodiversity. Sheep graze here. Branderwal is integrated into the surrounding agricultural landscape with a green embankment planted with a flower-rich herb mixture.

The solar panels are mounted on a patented modular support structure about 2 meters high. The bifacial panels allow some sunlight to pass through. The space between the structures also allows for even distribution of air and water into the soil.
